 Qantas Under 23s coach Graham Arnold believes that similarities between last night's draw for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Football tournament and the 2004 version will work to his side's advantage.

Just like in 2004, Australia drew Argentina, Serbia and an African nation (Ivory Coast in 2008 compared with Tunisia in 2004) and Arnold is hopeful of emulating the performance of four years ago when the team made it out of the group stage.

THEY MAY be fish out of water but four Gold Coast celebrity sportsmen are ready to feel the need for speed tonight.

The Toyota Celebrity Drag Race for Charity will be held tonight as part of this weekend's Castrol EDGE Tin Top Titles at Willowbank Raceway.

Stepping up to the mark tonight will be Socceroo, Queensland Roar defender and former English Premier League soccer player Danny Tiatto, Australia's strongest man 'Thunder' (aka Derek Boyer) of the blockbuster television program Gladiators, Gold Coast Blaze NBL player Ben Melmeth and three-time and reigning Australian ironman champion Shannon Eckstein.

Why its tough at the top

I've been following the India v South Africa series with some interest.

Not because of the media's beat up of this series that was billed as the contest for the No.2 ranking behind Australia, but because to me it seems that any team that play well against Australia tend to not go as well in their next series, and I wanted to see what happened this time.

STUBBINS HANDED SIX MATCH SUSPENSION

Adelaide United FC Assistant Coach Phil Stubbins has been suspended for six AFC Champions League matches by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Disciplinary Committee.

 

Stubbins was reported for comments he allegedly made to the referee after midfielder Jonas Salley was sent off just before half time in The Reds opening AFC Champions League 2008 match on March 12 against the Pohang Steelers in South Korea. The referee made a report against Stubbins resulting in the AFC handing the Assistant Coach a six game ban from the sidelines.

THOMPSON DESPERATE TO BE READY FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

Qantas Socceroos striker Archie Thompson says he is desperate to be fit and ready when Australia's next 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers take place in June, presented by FOXTEL.

With tickets going on sale to the general public tomorrow for the blockbuster match against Asian champions Iraq in Brisbane on 1 June, Thompson has indicated that he is focussed on getting back to action as soon as possible.
